Selenium is available in the human organism in various proteins and enzymes. This important trace element is indispensable for a great number of reactions in the human body. It is necessary to ensure normal thyroid metabolism as well as to protect the cells. In addition, selenium has a potentially detoxifying effect, is able to eliminate heavy metals and bind free radicals. Being a constituent of the male sperms, it can have a positive effect on fertility. The selenium content of agricultural soil plays an important role in the food chain. Nowadays, most soils are rather depleted and low in selenium due to industrial farming and monocultures, especially in Central Europe. Unhealthy eating habits may result in selenium deficiency, which often also affects the elderly. Problems with the muscular system, changes in nails or a pale complexion may indicate a deficiency.
Warning: No substitute for a balanced and varied diet.
