Alpha lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that occurs naturally in the human body. The two sulfur atoms of the alpha lipoic acid are interconnected, which is why alpha lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble. As the R-alpha lipoic acid is a natural isomer, it can be absorbed much more easily than the synthetic S form! In its natural R form it occurs as a coenzyme in the mitochondria and has an important function in the cells energy metabolism. Among others, alpha lipoic acid can cross the blood brain-barrier easily and support the nervous system in case of oxidative stress. In the brain, in particular, due to its high energy demand, a large number of free radicals are formed. R-alpha lipoic acid also inhibits the decomposition of glutathione and is thus actively involved in the detoxification process.
